Heavy rainfall on Saturday August 29 2026 caused severe disruptions across the railway network when the Sarbhang River overflowed and submerged the tracks between Khutaha and Chitahara stations with approximately two feet of water. This weather emergency on the Satna Manikpur rail section under the Jabalpur division of West Central Railway forced authorities to suspend all train operations for about 4.5 hours to ensure safety. A total of 12 trains were halted at various stations including Satna Manikpur Majhgawan and Sagama following confirmation of dangerous track conditions by North Central Railway CPRO Dr Shivam Sharma and Manikpur Station Manager Shivesh Malviya. Passengers experienced significant delays and operational disruptions across multiple routes while railway teams worked tirelessly to manage the situation on the ground.
The sudden deluge resulted in the complete cancellation of the Satna Manikpur MEMU train alongside widespread delays for several major express services.
Trains affected by the stoppage included the Pawan Express Kashi Express Amrit Bharat Express Sarnath Express Danapur Express Godan Express and Rewa Anand Vihar Express. Authorities prioritized passenger safety in both directions halting services until conditions improved enough for safe passage. Once water levels began to recede railway personnel personally walked the tracks ahead of stranded trains to carefully guide them through the vulnerable zone and restore normalcy.
The severe weather event extended far beyond the immediate railway tracks causing extensive damage to infrastructure across the Satna Chitrakoot Nagod and Panna districts.
The Mandakini River in Chitrakoot reached its highest flood level in 23 years prompting the deployment of NDRF rescue teams to assist affected residents. Fortunately the situation improved by late afternoon with official reports confirming that water levels in the Mandakini had receded by 5.48 meters from their peak by 5:00 PM allowing Indian Railways to gradually resume normal operations and clear the backlog of delayed passenger trains.
