Ganges Erosion Threatens Sahibganj Tracks: Trains Diverted
The relentless erosion caused by the Ganges River has created a critical situation for the Eastern Railway, putting tracks at immediate risk in the Sahibganj region. The Maharajpur-Sakrigali section, under the Malda Division, is currently facing a major threat as the river encroaches upon the railway embankment.
Emergency Situation Near Jhunjhri Bridge
On Tuesday, September 29, 2026, the erosion intensified rapidly near the Jhunjhri bridge. According to reports, the soil has begun to subside near pole number 219/32 of the down line. The situation is particularly alarming as floodwaters have moved within a distance of approximately 20 to 30 meters from the rail tracks.
Amarjit Kumar, the Maharajpur Station Manager, alerted the railway authorities to the subsidence on Tuesday afternoon, triggering an immediate emergency response.
War Footing Relief Operations
Railway administration officials have launched massive reinforcement efforts to stabilize the embankment. To prevent further damage, teams are working on a war footing using various materials, including:
- Boulders and Ballast: Being deployed to reinforce the embankment and stabilize the track bed.
- Goods Trains: Utilized specifically to transport heavy boulders to the affected site.
A specialized railway team conducted a site inspection via trolley to assess the extent of the damage and guide the deployment of resources to the most vulnerable spots.
Train Diversions and Cancellations
Due to the precarious condition of the tracks, several train services have been disrupted to ensure passenger safety. The following changes have been implemented:
- Express Trains: Six express trains are being diverted via the Dumka route.
- Cancellations: The Sahibganj-Rampurhat Down Passenger (No. 63406) has been cancelled.
- Short-Termination: The Jamalpur-Rampurhat Down Passenger (No. 53408) will now terminate early at Sahibganj.
High Alert Maintained
Nitish Kumar, the TI of the Sahibganj-Barharwa rail section, stated that officials remain on high alert. The railway team continues to monitor the erosion levels closely as they work to secure the integrity of the tracks against the rising river.
