Gaya-Dhanbad Rail Upgrade: Rs 340 Crore Project to Add 3rd & 4th Tracks!
The East Central Railway (ECR) is accelerating a massive infrastructure overhaul to transform the Gaya-Dhanbad rail section. This major project aims to significantly boost train speeds and operational capacity across a 242-kilometer stretch, ensuring smoother journeys for both passengers and goods.
Massive Investment for High-Speed Capacity
To drive this expansion, the ECR has issued an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) tender worth approximately Rs 340.16 crore. This initiative, which saw its foundation stone laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 1, 2024, is a strategic move to modernize one of the region's most critical corridors.
Key Project Highlights
- New Tracks: Installation of third and fourth lines to expand capacity.
- Advanced Signaling: Implementation of automatic block signaling for improved safety and efficiency.
- Core Sections: Construction is focused on the Chirailapothu-Paharpur and Koderma-Pradhankhanta stretches.
- Timeline: A completion deadline has been set for 24 months.
Relieving the Century-Old Grand Chord
The project is specifically designed to alleviate the heavy congestion currently experienced on the 120-year-old Howrah-New Delhi Grand Chord section. By increasing track capacity, the ECR will be able to manage the high volume of passenger and freight traffic much more effectively. While future decisions regarding new train services or increased frequencies will depend on updated timetables and operational requirements, the groundwork for better connectivity is being laid now.
Safety and Infrastructure Enhancements
In addition to the new lines, several other critical upgrades are underway to improve safety and freight clearance on the Dhanbad-Gaya route:
- Tunnel Upgrades: To accommodate taller freight trains, tunnels are undergoing upgrades involving high-voltage insulated coatings. This Rs 5.71 crore work is essential to mitigate current leakage and flashover risks.
- Station Redevelopment: ECR General Manager Dimpi Garg recently conducted inspections across the Danapur, Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (DDU), and Dhanbad divisions. The focus remains on ensuring that station redevelopment projects are completed with strict adherence to quality and timelines.
