Gopalganj and Sasamusa Bypass Rail Line Opens by December 2026

Indian Railways is making rapid progress on the new bypass rail line connecting Gopalganj station on the Chhapra-Thawe section to Sasamusa, with regular train operations scheduled to begin by December 2026. This crucial infrastructure initiative aims to streamline train movements and significantly improve regional connectivity for daily commuters and long-distance travellers alike.

Project Timeline and Current Status
The project received initial approval in February 2023 and has reached a major milestone with about 70 percent of construction work completed as of June 2026. Railway authorities are currently fast-tracking the remaining tasks to wrap up construction by August 2026, paving the way for a crucial trial run by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS). Key engineering milestones achieved so far include the completion of track laying, extensive soil work, ballast installation, and a major rail overbridge (ROB) on NH-27. Work is now heavily focused on final alignment, track packing, and advanced interlocking systems.

Additional Infrastructure Developments
Beyond the main bypass line, the project includes the construction of several other critical ROBs to ensure smooth and safe traffic flow. These are located near Turkaaha on the Thawe-Gopalganj section, at Harkhauli on the Hathua-Fulwaria section, and near Sipaya Halt at Kuchaikot Bazaar on the Sipaya-Jalalpur section.

Benefits for Passengers
Once fully operational, this bypass line will eliminate the current necessity for trains on the Chhapra-Thawe route to undergo time-consuming engine reversals or change directions at Thawe Junction. Long-distance trains will finally be able to travel directly toward Gorakhpur, saving passengers approximately 30 minutes in travel time and delivering seamless rail connectivity between Gopalganj, Gorakhpur, and Patna.
