Gorakhpur's New Overbridge Near Chauri Chaura Nears Completion

The residents and commuters of Gorakhpur are set to receive major relief as the newly constructed overbridge at Railway Crossing 147B near Chauri Chaura Railway Station nears its official inauguration. This massive infrastructure project is designed to eliminate the heavy traffic congestion that has long plagued the area and, more importantly, provide a seamless route for emergency healthcare services.
Initially sanctioned in 2021 with a budget of ₹59.44 crores, the project saw its foundation stone laid by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at Mundera Bazaar on December 31, 2021. Now, the project is entering its final stages of preparation.
Official Inspection and Safety Directives
On October 14, 2026, Gorakhpur District Magistrate Deepak Meena and Chief Development Officer Shashwat Tripurari conducted a comprehensive on-site inspection. They were accompanied by a technical team comprising engineers from the Setu Nigam, Public Works Department (PWD), and the Electricity Corporation.
During the inspection, the District Magistrate issued several critical directives to ensure the bridge's readiness and safety:
- Safety Measures: Immediate installation of safety nets on both sides of the overbridge.
- Road Maintenance: Thorough cleaning of the divider on the Gorakhpur-Deoria road.
- Aviation Assessment: Evaluating the suitability of a site at Futhwainar for a potential helipad.
The Design Debate: Y-Model vs L-Model
The journey toward completion has not been without its share of local controversy. A significant debate erupted regarding the bridge's design, which was shifted from the originally proposed 'Y-model' to an 'L-model'. This change sparked protests from local traders and community activists, including OBC Party National President Kalishankar Yaduvanshi.
Critics argued that the original Y-model was essential to ensure better connectivity between Mundera Bazaar and the local Community Health Centre (CHC). They expressed concerns that the new design might hinder access to vital services.
"The Y-model remains a priority to connect the Sonbarsa area and support local trade," clarified Central Minister of State Kamlesh Paswan, dismissing allegations that the design change was politically motivated.
Minister Paswan, along with MLA Sarvan Nishad, has reaffirmed their commitment to the holistic development of the Chauri Chaura region, emphasizing that the infrastructure aims to serve the long-term interests of the public.
A Vital Lifeline for the Region
While there were initial reports suggesting an inauguration date around October 17, officials have not yet finalized the exact schedule for the opening and the laying of the foundation stone for the associated service road.
Regardless of the exact date, the overbridge is expected to become a vital lifeline for the area. It will serve as a crucial corridor for transporting critically ill patients to hospitals and will provide much-needed relief to thousands of daily commuters navigating the busy railway crossing.
