Haridwar Ardh Kumbh 2027: Railways Begins Massive Upgrades
Railways begins massive infrastructure upgrades and staff training to manage the passenger surge for Haridwar Ardh Kumbh 2027.

Preparations for the highly anticipated Haridwar Ardh Kumbh 2027 are already in full swing. To manage the massive influx of pilgrims expected to descend upon the holy city, the railway administration has launched a comprehensive master plan in collaboration with the Uttarakhand government.
As of November 1, 2026, officials have confirmed that the focus is on a massive overhaul of both infrastructure and manpower to ensure seamless passenger movement and safety during the event.
Major Infrastructure Overhaul at 10 Key Stations
A significant part of the master plan involves the intensive upgrading of 10 vital railway stations. These stations are critical hubs for pilgrims traveling to the Ardh Kumbh. The upgrade works will specifically target stations including:
- Haridwar
- Jwalapur
- Motichur
- Yog Nagari Rishikesh
The infrastructure improvements are designed to enhance passenger comfort and flow. Key areas of focus include the modernization of circulating areas, the installation of new foot overbridges (FOBs), and the addition of ramps to ensure wheelchair accessibility. Additionally, the railways are prioritizing the provision of clean drinking water, improved sanitation facilities, better catering services, and enhanced medical assistance at these locations.
Strategic Crowd Management and Train Operations
To prevent chaos during peak periods, authorities are developing dedicated holding areas. These zones will ensure that passengers move in an orderly fashion from the station premises to the platforms, preventing dangerous overcrowding.
In a strategic move to manage heavy traffic during the Shahi Snan (royal bath) period, a new operational proposal is under consideration. This proposal suggests terminating long-distance trains at Jwalapur station during the critical window between D-2 and D+2 days. This plan is currently awaiting final approval from the Railway Board.
To further streamline the journey, the following measures are being implemented:
- Deployment of additional staff for ticket checking and crowd control.
- Expansion of physical ticket counters to reduce waiting times.
- Increased availability of digital and mobile ticketing options for a contactless experience.
High-Tech Security and Intensive Staff Training
Safety and service quality are at the heart of these preparations. Mahesh Yadav, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, stated that intensive training programs for railway staff are already underway at the Zonal Railway Training Institute. The training focuses on maintaining punctuality, efficient manpower deployment, and high-quality service delivery.
On the security front, the railways are integrating advanced technologies to monitor crowds and ensure passenger safety. The upcoming security framework will include:
- High-definition CCTV camera networks.
- Facial recognition systems for real-time crowd monitoring.
- Integration of panic buttons to allow passengers to seek immediate help.
All departments are working in close coordination to ensure that these massive projects are completed well ahead of the 2027 schedule.
