Haridwar Ardh Kumbh 2027: New Trains & Station Upgrades

The Indian Railways is finalizing massive preparations to manage the anticipated surge of pilgrims for the Ardh Kumbh Mela 2027 in Haridwar. To facilitate the movement of millions, the Ministry of Railways has outlined a comprehensive plan involving new train services, local station stoppages, and significant infrastructure improvements.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed these developments in a letter to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, highlighting the scale of connectivity being established to support the spiritual event.
New Train Services for Ardh Kumbh 2027
To boost regional connectivity and provide easier access for pilgrims, three new rail services have been sanctioned. These include the extension of the Bandra Terminus–Delhi Sarai Rohilla Garib Rath Express to Haridwar, ensuring better links for travelers from the western coast. Additionally, new AC Express services will be introduced, connecting Haridwar to Veraval and Okha.
Strategic Stoppages to Manage Crowds
With peak days expected to see between 1.5 to 2 lakh passengers, authorities are taking steps to prevent extreme congestion at the main Haridwar station. To distribute the passenger load, major trains will be permitted to halt at several local stations, including:
- Jwalapur
- Laksar
- Rishikesh
- Motichur
Major Infrastructure Upgrades at Haridwar Station
The Haridwar station is undergoing a significant overhaul to accommodate the massive influx of travelers. Key projects include the construction of a new Platform 10 and the extension of Platforms 2 and 3 to ensure they can support long 24-coach trains.
Furthermore, a permanent holding area spanning approximately 4,500 square meters is being developed. This facility is designed to accommodate up to 20,000 people and will be equipped with essential amenities such as:
- Seating areas
- Drinking water facilities
- Toilets
- Dedicated ticketing counters
Enhanced Safety and Security Measures
The Moradabad division of the Northern Railway will oversee the operational safety of the region. To maintain order and security, the railways are implementing high-tech solutions and specialized personnel management:
- Advanced Surveillance: Deployment of CCTV cameras and facial recognition technology.
- Emergency Readiness: Establishment of 24-hour control centers and medical rooms.
- Crowd Control: RPF and GRP personnel will manage passenger flow using color-coded zones based on destinations like Delhi, Ambala, Saharanpur, and Moradabad.
Project Completion Timeline
Following an inspection by Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar in June 2026, the administration has set an ambitious goal.
