11 Long-Distance Trains Get Special Hygiene & Maintenance Boost

Indian Railways has launched a rigorous new initiative to improve hygiene for long-distance trains, ensuring that cleanliness is maintained throughout journeys that exceed 40 hours. This specialized monitoring program is designed to move beyond periodic cleaning, providing consistent housekeeping and maintenance for passengers on extended routes.
Enhanced Oversight for Major Express Services
The Railway Board issued a formal directive on October 3, 2026, targeting 11 specific long-distance services. The mandate requires owning depots to take rigorous oversight of these trains to ensure amenities remain in top condition. Major services included in this high-priority list are:
- Vivek Express
- Awadh Assam Express
- Amarpali Express
- Jhelum Express
To maintain these standards, assigned maintenance supervisors and officers are now responsible for conducting regular reviews of cleanliness and addressing any passenger grievances immediately.
Strict Protocols for Cleanliness and Repairs
The new policy places a heavy emphasis on the most critical areas of passenger comfort. Key focus areas for the inspection teams include:
- Consistent sanitation and cleanliness of toilets.
- Efficient and frequent waste disposal.
- Immediate resolution of minor mechanical or electrical faults.
To support these efforts, operational protocols have been strengthened at Clean Train Station (CTS) points. These stations will deploy dedicated teams, including plumbers and electrical staff, to tackle any necessary repairs during scheduled stops.
On-Board Housekeeping and Accountability
The role of the On-Board Housekeeping Staff (OBHS) has also been intensified. Under the new guidelines, OBHS members are required to collect waste from every single coach at two-hour intervals. Additionally, these staff members have undergone training to handle minor maintenance tasks on the go.
To ensure absolute accountability, the policy mandates a digital trail of cleanliness. Officials must take time-stamped photographs of coach interiors and toilets at several key stages, including the starting stations, designated inspection points, and terminal stations.
Field Inspection at Patna Junction
The implementation of these rules has already moved into the field. On October 5, 2026, East Central Railway General Manager Dimpi Garg conducted a personal inspection at Patna Junction. During her visit, she reviewed the availability of passenger amenities and gathered direct feedback to ensure the new hygiene and maintenance standards are being met effectively on the ground.
