Indian Railways Break Journey Rule: Travel to multiple cities on a single ticket, check eligibility

Indian Railways offers a helpful feature called the break journey facility for passengers traveling long distances. This rule allows travelers to stop at a city along their route, spend some time there, and then continue their journey to the final destination using the same ticket. It is a great option for those who want to visit multiple places without buying separate tickets.

Who can use the break journey facility?

This facility is available for passengers holding single journey tickets for distances over 500 kilometers. The number of breaks allowed depends on the total distance of the trip. For journeys between 500 km and 1000 km, one break is permitted. For journeys exceeding 1000 km, passengers can take up to two breaks.

What are the main rules and conditions?

There are specific guidelines to ensure the facility is used correctly. The first break can only be taken after the passenger has traveled at least 500 km from the starting station. Each break can last for a maximum of two days, excluding the day of arrival and departure. It is important to note that this rule does not apply to premium trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Jan Shatabdi Express.

How to avail the break journey service?

Requirement Detail
Endorsement Ticket must be signed by the Station Master at the halt station
Details needed Station code, date, and Station Master’s initials
Connecting Train Stops under 24 hours for connecting trains are not break journeys
Restriction Break journey is not allowed before the reserved portion of the trip ends

Passengers must get their tickets endorsed by the Station Master at the halt station. Without this official stamp and signature, the passenger may be treated as traveling without a valid ticket for the remaining part of the journey.
