India has achieved a major milestone in its international railway cooperation by delivering the first consignment of 18 modern broad-gauge coaches to Bangladesh. This delivery marks a significant step forward in strengthening the railway partnership between the two neighboring nations.

Arrival at Darshana Station

The coaches, which originated from the Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala, officially arrived at the Darshana Railway Station in Chuadanga, Bangladesh, on October 16, 2026. This shipment is a critical component of a massive contract for 200 broad-gauge passenger coaches, valued at ₹915 crore.

Advanced Technology and Passenger Comfort

These new coaches are engineered to significantly upgrade the passenger experience in Bangladesh. Designed to operate at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour, they come equipped with several high-tech features aimed at safety and convenience:

  • Enhanced Safety: Integrated CCTV surveillance and advanced alarm systems.
  • Specialized Amenities: Dedicated prayer rooms and baby-care areas for passenger comfort.
  • Technical Adaptation: Specialized electrical systems specifically adapted for 425 volts.

Detailed Breakdown of the First Batch

To cater to a wide range of traveler needs, the initial consignment includes a diverse mix of coach types:

  • 11 non-air-conditioned Shovon chair cars
  • 3 air-conditioned chair cars
  • 2 air-conditioned sleeper coaches
  • 2 air-conditioned power cars

Contract Details and Economic Impact

The agreement, signed on May 20, 2024, between Bangladesh Railway and India's RITES Limited, is being financed by the European Investment Bank. While this first batch has successfully arrived, the remaining 182 coaches are scheduled to be delivered by December 2027.

Beyond improving regional connectivity, the deal has provided a notable boost to Indian railway revenue. The Firozpur Railway Division reportedly earned approximately ₹91.73 lakh from this inaugural export consignment. This successful delivery follows a previous collaboration during 2015-16, where 120 LHB broad-gauge coaches were supplied to Bangladesh.
