India First Hydrogen Train Successfully Clears High Speed Trial at 120 KM/H

India is stepping into a greener future of rail travel as the country's inaugural hydrogen-powered train successfully completes high-speed trial runs reaching a maximum velocity of 120 KM/H. Indian Railways is now finalizing preparations to transition the train into regular operations at a sustainable speed of 110 KM/H following rigorous testing. This major milestone comes after a crucial trial conducted on the Jind-Sonipat section on September 9, 2026, which assessed emergency braking distance and oscillation stability. Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar confirmed on September 6, 2026, that technical evaluations at 120 KM/H were successful. Authorities are currently coordinating with relevant stakeholders to finalize operational rail sections while simultaneously managing the technical infrastructure and fuel supply arrangements required for long-term service. Designed and manufactured domestically by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai under the Make in India initiative, the train was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 17, 2026. While the train currently serves the 89-km Jind-Sonipat route at an operational speed of 75 KM/H, the successful high-speed trials mark a pivotal step in the national pilot project to integrate environmentally responsible transportation technology into the broader Indian rail network.

The innovative train generates power via hydrogen fuel cells to produce only water vapor and heat as by-products, representing a significant move toward eliminating diesel, carbon, and noise emissions in the rail sector.
