1,000+ New Regular Trains to Boost Indian Railways Network
Indian Railways to launch over 1,000 new regular trains following the completion of massive four-track quadrupling projects on key corridors.

Indian Railways is set for a massive expansion in its service capacity. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a strategic plan to introduce more than 1,000 new regular trains across the country. This initiative is a direct response to the ongoing network quadrupling project, which is designed to overhaul the nation's rail infrastructure.
The Quadrupling Revolution
The rollout of these additional services depends on the expansion of seven critical railway corridors. These routes are currently being upgraded through a process known as quadrupling, which involves adding a fourth parallel track to existing lines. This massive infrastructure investment aims to increase network capacity and mitigate the persistent congestion that has long affected major routes.
Connecting the Golden Quadrilateral and Beyond
The expansion is primarily focused on the 'Golden Quadrilateral' network, which serves as the backbone of Indian rail connectivity. The new services will strengthen the links between major hubs, including New Delhi and Mumbai. Beyond this core network, the project also targets three essential diagonal corridors to ensure smoother transit:
- Delhi–Chennai
- Mumbai–Kolkata
- Delhi–Guwahati
Solving Congestion and Delay Issues
By adding more tracks, the Ministry aims to provide a permanent solution to the high pressure caused by the simultaneous growth in passenger traffic and freight movement, such as coal transportation. The completion of these corridors is expected to deliver several key benefits:
- Significant reduction in train delays.
- Alleviation of chronic passenger waiting lists.
- Improved availability of train reservations.
- Enhanced overall operational efficiency.
Regular Services vs. Festive Specials
It is important to note that these 1,000-plus services are regular scheduled trains. They are distinct from the temporary 'special trains' that are often deployed during peak festive periods, such as the 18,000 special services mobilized for Diwali and Chhath. These new regular services will be introduced immediately following the completion of the four-lining expansion work on the identified routes.
