Indian Railways will upgrade conventional trains with 12000 HP push-pull locomotives

Indian Railways is rolling out a major strategic modernization plan to upgrade existing conventional passenger train services by deploying high-powered locomotives. Confirmed in reports released on September 10 and 11, 2026, the railway authority will equip trains with two 6000-horsepower locomotives operating in a dual push-pull configuration to deliver a combined 12000 HP. This initiative aims to enhance the overall travel experience on non-Vande Bharat trains by significantly increasing acceleration and operational speeds. Once deployed on appropriately upgraded routes, these train sets will be capable of reaching speeds of up to 160 kmph. The plan serves as a smart alternative to full train-set replacements, allowing existing conventional coaches to benefit from advanced engine technology without requiring the immediate retirement of traditional rolling stock.

Boost in Speed and Efficiency

Senior railway officials stated that the primary goal of this rollout is to improve efficiency and performance across the locomotive-hauled fleet. A key efficiency feature of this upgrade is the complete elimination of separate diesel power generator cars. Instead, the new locomotives will be equipped to supply electricity directly to passenger coaches, seamlessly powering essential amenities such as air conditioning, lighting, and fans. This transition toward more energy-efficient and quieter technology is expected to be executed efficiently through procurement and maintenance contracts involving both public and private sector technology partners.
