The Indian Railways is embarking on a monumental transformation journey to modernize its infrastructure for the next half-century. Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), a comprehensive redevelopment initiative is being executed for 1,300 stations across the country, designed to meet the evolving needs of passengers for the next 50 years.

A Seamless Transformation Without Disruptions

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that work has already commenced at all 1,300 identified stations. As of November 5, 2026, approximately 400 stations have already reached completion. A standout feature of this massive undertaking is the efficiency of execution; unlike many international railway projects that require operations to halt for several years, Indian Railways is carrying out these upgrades without disrupting rail traffic.

Customized Architecture and Multimodal Hubs

Moving away from standardized, one-size-fits-all designs, each station is being developed according to a specific master plan. The goal is to transform these locations into seamless multimodal transport hubs. To preserve the cultural essence of different regions, architectural designs are being tailored to reflect local heritage, with significant projects underway in locations such as Jaipur, Jodhpur, Ahmedabad, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu.

Modern Amenities and Enhanced Safety

The redevelopment is heavily focused on the passenger experience, ensuring that modern facilities are accessible to all. Key improvements include:

  • Upgraded station buildings and spacious waiting halls
  • Improved toilet facilities and better air circulation
  • Relocated ticketing counters for smoother flow
  • Enhanced passenger information systems
  • Specialized accessibility features for persons with disabilities
  • Heightened overall passenger safety protocols

Managing High-Volume Festive Crowds

To tackle the immense pressure of high passenger volumes, especially during festive seasons, the railways have implemented strategic crowd management solutions. Large holding areas have been established at some of the most congested stations in the country, including New Delhi, Udhna, and Anand Vihar Terminal. These specialized areas are capable of accommodating up to 20,000 people simultaneously, ensuring order and safety during peak travel periods.
