18,000 Special Trains for Festive Rush: Railways' Massive Plan

Indian Railways is gearing up for a massive festive season by operating approximately 18,000 special trains. This is a significant jump from the 12,000 special services managed during the same period last year, as the Ministry of Railways aims to accommodate the massive surge in seasonal travelers.

AI-Driven Deployment for Peak Demand

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the surge in services is a strategic move to address heavy seasonal demand. To ensure the most efficient deployment, the railway authorities used an AI model to analyze passenger travel data from the last decade, allowing them to optimize train routes and schedules effectively.

Smart Crowd Management at Major Hubs

With an expected influx of nearly two crore passengers traveling from the Delhi region alone, authorities have implemented rigorous crowd control measures. During a review at New Delhi Railway Station on November 6, 2026, Minister Vaishnaw highlighted several key initiatives to manage the rush:

  • Dedicated Holding Areas: High-traffic hubs like New Delhi, Udhna, and Anand Vihar Terminal have established specialized holding zones.
  • High Capacity: The facilities at New Delhi and Udhna stations are specifically designed to accommodate up to 20,000 passengers each.
  • Streamlined Boarding: A dedicated holding area has been introduced for reserved passengers to make the boarding process smoother.
  • Space Optimization: Luggage-checking facilities have been relocated to expand the available capacity in waiting rooms.

To monitor crowd density in real-time, the railway has also integrated advanced technology, installing over 700 AI-enabled cameras across stations.

Nationwide Station Redevelopment

Beyond managing the immediate festive rush, the Ministry is working on long-term infrastructure improvements. Currently, 1,300 railway stations are undergoing redevelopment, with approximately 400 projects already completed. These upgrades are designed to improve passenger safety, increase capacity, and incorporate local architectural aesthetics into the station designs.
