Indian Railways announces extensive direct special train services for 2026 festival season
Indian Railways has unveiled a comprehensive operational strategy for the 2026 festival season, spanning from September to December, aimed at providing seamless travel and eliminating the need for passengers to change trains. Announced in early September 2026, the initiative focuses on direct connectivity for major festivals including Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja to ensure passengers reach their destinations comfortably.
The core of this initiative is a 90-day operational schedule effective from September 11 to December 7, 2026, designed to facilitate continuous rail capacity for the festive period. Additionally, 432 special train trips are scheduled between September 4 and November 30, 2026, to accommodate travel demand for Krishna Janmashtami and other celebrations. Other regional efforts include 112 services for Onam, which ran from August 14 to September 6, 2026, and 262 special trains for Ganesh Chaturthi that commenced on September 9, 2026, primarily serving the Konkan-Goa route.
Special Trains and Route Planning
Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna has announced the regularization of the Mysuru–Ajmer Express Special and the continuation of the Hubballi–Chikkamagaluru–Hubballi Express Special. Officials, including Samarth Gupta, Senior DCM of the Northern Railway Lucknow division, and Traffic Inspector Rajesh Kumar, have confirmed specific routing plans. Notably, direct services will connect northern and southern hubs to bypass traditional interchange points like Jhansi and Bhopal, which historically caused passenger congestion.
Key routes receiving special attention include Delhi-NCR to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, with direct trains to Varanasi, Ayodhya, Muzaffarpur, and Jogbani. Specifically, four pairs of Diwali special trains originating from Varanasi to Delhi, Chandigarh, and Patna will operate from October through late November. Furthermore, the Udaipur-Rishikesh Weekly Special has been extended from October 20 to November 24, 2026, and new direct connectivity from Kanpur to Bengaluru has been established.
Coach Configuration and Passenger Convenience
These 19-coach special trains are configured to serve diverse passenger groups, featuring nine sleeper class coaches, two AC Three-Tier coaches, six general coaches, and two SLR-D coaches. The initiative aims to alleviate the 'waitlist scramble' and provide reliable travel options for industrial workers, students, and families across states including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Delhi-NCR.
