Indian Railways witnesses major middle class shift as AC 3 Economy demand surges

Indian Railways is witnessing a significant shift in passenger preference as rising temperatures and increased travel demand drive the middle class away from Sleeper class toward AC-3 Economy coaches. Data indicates that AC-3 seat capacity has surged by 163% over the past decade, with the class now accounting for 32.3% of total passenger revenue. This trend aligns with the national transporter's strategy to provide affordable, air-conditioned travel for budget-conscious passengers.

Financial Growth and Passenger Ridership

Recent financial projections for the 2025-26 fiscal year estimate passenger revenue to reach Rs 92,800 crore, a 16% increase, with AC 3-tier services contributing approximately Rs 37,115 crore. The popularity of the AC-3 category is reflected in rider growth, which climbed from 11 crore passengers in 2019-20 to 26 crore in 2024-25. The expansion is supported by structural improvements, such as the introduction of AC-3 Economy coaches that feature 83 berths compared to the 72 in traditional AC 3-tier configurations.

Enhanced Comfort and Strict Overcrowding Regulations

To manage the surge in demand and enhance passenger comfort, Indian Railways has integrated several upgrades, including individual AC vents, CCTV surveillance, and modular seating. Furthermore, to combat overcrowding, the ministry implemented strict regulations on May 17, 2026, prohibiting waitlisted passengers from entering reserved coaches, with fines for violations ranging from Rs 250 in Sleeper to Rs 440 in AC classes. The expansion continues into the current financial year, with plans to introduce AC coaches in the Amrit Bharat 3.0 Express and the rollout of new Vande Bharat sleeper trains, solidifying the AC-3 tier as a cornerstone of modern Indian rail travel.
