Indian Railways accelerates nationwide ROB and RUB construction projects
Indian Railways is rapidly advancing the construction of railway overbridges and railway underbridges across the country to replace level crossings, enhance passenger safety, and improve overall train punctuality. Regular travelers and railway enthusiasts will find these infrastructure upgrades crucial for smoother journeys and reduced wait times at crossings.
As of February 1, 2026, Indian Railways has sanctioned 4,802 ROB and RUB projects at a total cost of ₹1,14,196 crore. To speed up these essential works, the government is holding periodic meetings with state officials, standardizing superstructure drawings, and executing projects on a single-entity basis.
Regional Traffic Regulations and Progress
Local infrastructure developments are currently impacting traffic movement across several states. In Bihar, a traffic block is active from September 12 to September 27, 2026, on the Saharsa-Mansi rail section to facilitate ROB construction near a local Ghat. Similarly, in Barsoi, heavy vehicle movement was restricted near the Manman railway crossing from September 4 to September 29, 2026, for the construction of pier caps.
Significant progress is also visible in other regions. In the Tumakuru Lok Sabha constituency, Union Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna has mandated the completion of 32 ongoing projects by the 2026-27 fiscal year. At the Trichy Junction, the railway portion of the ROB is scheduled for completion by the end of October 2026, with full commissioning targeted before the Pongal festival in 2027. Furthermore, construction on the Chandigarh-Baltana RUB gained strong momentum after the resolution of technical hurdles on September 7, 2026.
Broadening Infrastructure Development
Highlighting the broader scope of railway engineering achievements, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw showcased the success of the Bairabi-Sairang railway line on September 13, 2026. This 51.38-kilometer link connects the Assam border to Sairang in Mizoram. The major engineering feat includes 143 bridges—with one reaching an impressive height of 114 meters—and 45 tunnels, successfully completed at a cost exceeding ₹8,070 crore.
