Indian Railways successfully electrifies 99 percent of its broad gauge network

Indian Railways is rapidly transforming into one of the greenest railway networks in the world after achieving a landmark milestone in its nationwide electrification drive. According to official data shared by the Ministry of Railways, Indian Railways has successfully electrified 99.6 percent of its broad-gauge network as of July 22, 2026. This massive infrastructural leap positions India as the world's second-most electrified large railway system, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable public transport and reduced carbon emissions for everyday passengers.

• 70,002 out of 70,271 route kilometers are now fully electrified across the country.
• Only 269 route kilometers remain pending in specific sections across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Goa, and Rajasthan.
• Diesel consumption for railway traction has drastically plummeted from 293 crore liters in 2015-16 to 108 crore liters in 2024-25.
• Ten states including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, Punjab, and Delhi have achieved 100% electrification status.
• The government has earmarked an allocation of ₹5,000 crore for electrification works in the 2026-27 financial year to complete the remaining tasks.

Accelerated Pace of Infrastructure Development

Union Minister for Railways Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw presented the comprehensive progress data to the Lok Sabha, highlighting the unprecedented speed of recent railway projects. While only 21,801 route kilometers were electrified in the six decades leading up to 2014, an impressive 48,072 additional route kilometers have been rapidly completed between 2014 and 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi noted that the vast majority of this vital network upgrade was accomplished within the last decade. This relentless push aims to eliminate gaps in traction continuity, enabling seamless transit for both express and freight trains without the need for locomotive changes at divisional boundaries.

Green Energy and Passenger Benefits

The transition away from fossil fuels has yielded massive environmental and economic dividends, resulting in substantial foreign exchange savings for the nation. Beyond overhead wire electrification, environmental initiatives continue to scale up rapidly, with over 1,260 MW of solar and wind power capacity commissioned as of June 2026. Following the historic launch of India's first hydrogen-powered train on July 17, 2026, the national transporter continues to leverage cutting-edge electric traction to achieve greater energy efficiency, lower maintenance costs, and higher operational speeds for millions of daily commuters.
