Indian Railways introduces advanced waste management systems to improve train cleanliness

Indian Railways is taking major steps to transform onboard hygiene across its premium train network. Passengers travelling on premium services can now expect a cleaner and more pleasant journey as the national transporter tackles long-standing issues with overflowing waste bins and litter. Indian Railways is upgrading onboard hygiene across Vande Bharat, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto services through innovative technical solutions and stricter enforcement.

To solve the persistent problem of overflowing bins, the Wagon Repair Workshop in Jhansi has developed a prototype garbage disposal system that increases waste-holding capacity from 18 litres to 367.4 litres. This new undergear collection system utilizes gravity to move refuse from a dedicated drop box in the passenger area to an external collector. This mechanism successfully prevents waste from accumulating inside coaches or being discarded along the tracks, protecting the environment and keeping stations clean.

Strict Penalties and Compliance

These initiatives are aligned with the broader Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that these rules involve expanded waste processing across railway stations and trains. To enforce these standards, the ministry has established dedicated Environment and Housekeeping Management departments. In addition to technical upgrades, the railway has introduced stringent punitive measures, doubling the penalty for littering on railway premises from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 as of August 24, 2026. Passengers should note that non-payment can lead to court proceedings and fines up to Rs 2,000.

Onboard Cleaning Protocols

Operational protocols now focus heavily on high-efficiency maintenance. This includes the famous 14-minute miracle cleaning scheme for Vande Bharat trains and the mandate for On-Board Housekeeping Service (OBHS) staff to collect waste in sealed bags for safe disposal at nominated stations. Furthermore, the ministry is rolling out enhanced cleaning schedules for general coaches on long-distance trains, targeting a service interval of every 60 to 90 minutes. These systemic changes aim to elevate the overall passenger experience by providing cleanliness standards comparable to high-end hospitality.
