Indian Railways provides affordable station retiring rooms for delayed passengers

Indian Railways offers budget-friendly retiring room and dormitory facilities at major railway stations to help passengers deal with long train delays, early morning departures, or late-night arrivals. Instead of waiting uncomfortably on station platforms, travellers can access clean spaces with both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned options starting at extremely low rates. Here is everything you need to know about booking, pricing, eligibility, and cancellation rules for railway station accommodation. Retiring room beds are available for rates as low as twenty rupees, providing a comfortable and safe alternative for stranded or early-arriving passengers.
Eligibility and Booking Rules
Eligibility for these rooms is strictly limited to passengers holding a confirmed or Reservation Against Cancellation train ticket. Passengers travelling with waitlisted tickets are not permitted to use this service, and a valid ten-digit PNR is mandatory for all bookings. Travellers can reserve accommodations online through the IRCTC Tourism website or mobile app anywhere from sixty days in advance up to four hours prior to the train scheduled departure. For those who prefer offline methods, bookings can also be made directly at station ticket counters, subject to availability. When checking in, passengers must present a valid government-issued identity document such as an Aadhaar card or driving license.
Duration and Service Charges
Booking durations range from a minimum of three hours to a maximum of forty-eight hours, with many major stations now offering flexible hourly increments. IRCTC levies nominal service charges for these bookings: twenty rupees for a retiring room and ten rupees for a dormitory bed for stays up to twenty-four hours. For longer bookings between twenty-four and forty-eight hours, the charges increase to forty rupees and twenty rupees respectively.
Cancellation and Train Delay Policies
The accommodation cancellation policy is tiered to handle various travel situations. A twenty percent deduction of the tariff applies for cancellations made two or more days before the occupation date, while a fifty percent deduction applies for cancellations made one day prior. Please note that no refunds are provided for same-day cancellations or no-shows. However, if Indian Railways cancels a train entirely, a full refund is processed automatically. Furthermore, should your train be delayed by more than three hours, passengers are strongly advised to notify the retiring room manager promptly to adjust their check-in time and avoid any penalties.
