Indian Railways has officially sanctioned three key infrastructure projects totaling 675 crore rupees, aimed at enhancing passenger safety, modernizing signaling systems, and expanding freight logistics across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. These vital upgrades were announced on September 1 and September 2, 2026, reflecting the national transporter's ongoing commitment to a safer and faster rail network. Here are the key details of the approved projects: 170 crore rupees allocated for Kavach 4.0 in Uttar Pradesh covering 712 route kilometers within the Moradabad division. 233 crore rupees sanctioned for electronic interlocking systems across 21 railway stations in the Samastipur division of Bihar. 272 crore rupees approved for an 11-kilometer bypass line in West Bengal between Adra and Joychandi Pahar to streamline freight movement.
The first major initiative, allocated
170 crore rupees, involves the implementation of the advanced
Kavach 4.0 automatic train protection system across
712 route kilometers within the Moradabad division of Northern Railway in Uttar Pradesh. Kavach is a state-of-the-art indigenous safety technology designed to prevent signal passing at danger, apply automatic brakes during emergencies, and effectively regulate train speeds to ensure absolute passenger safety even during adverse weather conditions.
In the second project, located in the Samastipur division of East Central Railway in Bihar, the railway board has granted
233 crore rupees for the installation of modern electronic interlocking systems across
21 railway stations. This technological upgrade will replace older mechanical signaling methods, significantly reducing train detention times at stations, improving punctuality, and enhancing overall operational efficiency for daily commuters.
The third project, valued at
272 crore rupees, focuses on the South Eastern Railway in West Bengal, where a new
11-kilometer bypass line will be constructed between Adra and Joychandi Pahar. This bypass is intended to provide crucial path segregation and bidirectional connectivity for the upcoming third line, facilitating the smooth movement of an estimated
6.065 freight trains daily. This intervention will alleviate severe operational bottlenecks and heavily support industrial traffic in the region.
While these specific investments target regional infrastructure improvements, they seamlessly align with broader national railway initiatives. Projects like the previously announced Surat-Dankuni Dedicated Freight Corridor are intended to link major industrial hubs in West Bengal with western ports in Gujarat, aiming to expedite eco-friendly, cost-effective freight transport across the entire country.
