On September 1, 2026, the Ministry of Railways announced the approval of three significant infrastructure projects across Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Bihar, totaling an investment of ₹675 crore. These initiatives aim to enhance rail safety, optimize freight logistics, and modernize signaling systems across the network. Here are the key highlights of these newly sanctioned railway projects: ₹170 crore sanctioned for Kavach 4.0 implementation in the Moradabad Division of Uttar Pradesh. ₹272 crore approved for a new 11-kilometer bypass line in West Bengal to boost freight traffic. ₹233 crore allocated for Electronic Interlocking systems at 21 stations in the Samastipur Division of Bihar.
In Uttar Pradesh,
₹170 crore has been sanctioned for the Northern Railway to implement Kavach 4.0 across the remaining
712 route kilometers of the Moradabad Division. This indigenous Automatic Train Protection system is designed to prevent Signal Passing at Danger incidents and automate braking to mitigate collision risks, ensuring a much safer journey for daily commuters and long-distance passengers alike.
In West Bengal, the South Eastern Railway will construct an
11-kilometer bypass line between the Adra end and Joychandipahar at a cost of ₹272 crore. This dedicated freight corridor is expected to support an additional
8.88 million tonnes per annum of traffic, facilitating the smooth movement of coal for BCCL and iron ore for SAIL. The project will increase section line capacity from
47.50% to 56.45% by the 2028-29 fiscal year, effectively removing operational bottlenecks and reducing delays for both passenger and goods trains.
Furthermore, the East Central Railway has received approval for a
₹233 crore investment in the Samastipur Division of Bihar. This vital project involves the installation of Electronic Interlocking systems at
21 stations, replacing outdated relay-based technology. The upgrade will significantly improve maintenance, fault detection, and operational flexibility while actively supporting broader Kavach integration efforts across the region.
