Indian Railways records strong growth in passenger traffic and freight loading for August 2026

Indian Railways has released official performance data for August 2026 showcasing significant progress across passenger services freight capacity and infrastructure development. According to the Ministry of Railways and Press Information Bureau updates released on September 13 2026 the national transporter achieved notable gains in both freight revenue and passenger volumes driven by targeted capacity expansions and special festival arrangements.

Freight loading reached 137.9 million tonnes (MT) in August 2026 marking a 5.4 percent increase from 130.9 MT in August 2025 alongside a 6.27 percent rise in freight revenue.
Passenger traffic grew to 67.27 crore passengers in August 2026 compared to 64.43 crore in the same month last year with suburban services surging by 9.02 percent to serve 38.01 crore travellers.
Five new Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals were commissioned taking the total network count to 149 terminals by the end of August 2026.
Financial performance for FY25 showed passenger earnings rose 7.15 percent to Rs 75,750 crore while freight service earnings climbed 1.61 percent to Rs 1.71 lakh crore compared to the previous year.

Freight Loading and Commodity Growth

The impressive jump in freight loading was supported by steady demand across multiple core sectors. Iron ore registered a strong 12.1 percent growth followed by clinker at 10.4 percent domestic containers at 9.2 percent and coal at 6 percent. Other commodities such as finished steel at 4.9 percent mineral oil at 3.1 percent and fertilizers at 1.6 percent also contributed positively to the overall freight basket. To further streamline logistics and supply chain efficiency across the country five new Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals were commissioned in August 2026 located at Shivlakha in Gujarat Nalli in Tamil Nadu Shaktinagar in Uttar Pradesh Deoragram in Madhya Pradesh and Brajrajnagar in Odisha bringing the total operational terminals to 149.

Passenger Services and Network Expansion

Passenger movement witnessed a substantial surge with millions of commuters relying on the railway network daily. The suburban rail segment played a major role in this uptick serving 38.01 crore passengers compared to 34.89 crore in August 2025. To efficiently manage holiday rushes and passenger demand ahead of festive periods Indian Railways operated 144 special train trips between August 25 and 31 2026 which is a major jump from the 48 special trips recorded during the corresponding period in 2025. Furthermore 14 new Amrit Bharat services were regularized taking the total operational count of these popular modern trains to 86 and significantly boosting long-distance connectivity for passengers travelling across Bihar Uttar Pradesh Gujarat Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu.
