Indian Railways records strong growth in passenger traffic and freight loading for August 2026

Indian Railways has released official performance data for August 2026 showcasing significant progress across passenger services freight capacity and infrastructure development. According to the Ministry of Railways and Press Information Bureau updates released on September 13 2026 the national transporter achieved notable gains in both freight revenue and passenger volumes driven by targeted capacity expansions and special festival arrangements.
- Freight loading reached 137.9 million tonnes (MT) in August 2026 marking a 5.4 percent increase from 130.9 MT in August 2025 alongside a 6.27 percent rise in freight revenue.
- Passenger traffic grew to 67.27 crore passengers in August 2026 compared to 64.43 crore in the same month last year with suburban services surging by 9.02 percent to serve 38.01 crore travellers.
- Five new Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals were commissioned taking the total network count to 149 terminals by the end of August 2026.
- Financial performance for FY25 showed passenger earnings rose 7.15 percent to Rs 75,750 crore while freight service earnings climbed 1.61 percent to Rs 1.71 lakh crore compared to the previous year.
