Indian Railways is making train travel much more comfortable for families by expanding its passenger amenities. Indian Railways has officially expanded its infrastructure to include dedicated baby feeding rooms at approximately 500 railway stations nationwide. This thoughtful step aims to help mothers travel without worry. The initiative was recently announced by the Railway Ministry through the social media platform X, and it addresses the major challenges that nursing mothers often face while navigating crowded platforms and waiting halls. Along with these fully dedicated rooms, railways have also installed privacy screens and partitions inside existing waiting areas. Travelling with infants on long journeys just got a lot less stressful for families across the country.
According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, there were 423 stations equipped with feeding rooms in April 2025, a number that grew to 452 by July 2025. As of August 28, 2026, the total count has now reached nearly 500 stations pan-India. Local regions are also taking active steps to boost comfort. For instance, the Mumbai Division recently introduced 13 innovative Nursing Pods spread across seven major stations. These additions were implemented directly under the National Initiative for Feeding and Resting Infrastructure for Stations, commonly known as the NINFRIS policy.
The creation of these vital facilities has often relied on meaningful partnerships with organizations like the Child Help Foundation and Ladies Circle India. Funding has been successfully channelled through Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives and special projects like Project Ayushman. To ensure top-tier hygiene,
Zonal Railways are now mandated to oversee the ongoing maintenance, cleanliness, and periodic inspections of these rooms. Looking forward, Indian Railways has promised to scale up this infrastructure to cover even more locations. Furthermore, child-feeding and baby-changing facilities have already been integrated into the blueprints for upcoming bullet train projects, ensuring modern passenger comforts match world-class travel standards.
