Indian Railways launches baby feeding rooms at 500 stations for mothers

Indian Railways has introduced dedicated baby feeding rooms across 500 railway stations nationwide to ensure a comfortable travel experience for new mothers. Announced by the Ministry of Railways on August 27, 2026, this thoughtful initiative aims to eliminate the struggles of nursing in crowded railway premises by offering a private, safe, and hygienic environment for childcare during transit.

Here are the key highlights of the new railway baby feeding room initiative:

- Specialized breastfeeding rooms operational at approximately 500 railway stations across India.

- Designed to provide complete privacy, dignity, and hygiene for mothers and newborns.

- Developed at several locations, including Fatehpur station, with support from CSR initiatives like Himalaya Care.

- Equipped with modern amenities such as sofa beds, exhaust fans, and dedicated changing areas.

- Part of an ongoing expansion plan to cover more stations in the near future.

Enhanced Passenger Amenities

The national transporter has prioritized mother and child care as a core element of passenger welfare. Travelling with newborns often presents significant logistical and personal challenges, especially during long journeys. To address this, railway authorities have integrated privacy features such as curtains, partitions, and reliable door lock systems within existing waiting rooms or newly designated spaces.

According to Prayagraj Division PRO Amit Kumar Singh, facilities like the one at Fatehpur railway station are carefully crafted to offer a clean and dignified environment. Many of these upgraded rooms come fitted with two sofa beds, fans, exhaust fans, and child-friendly reclining seating positions alongside dedicated baby-changing areas.

Future Expansion and Public Response

Railway officials have confirmed that this rollout is only the beginning of a larger nationwide expansion plan. The ultimate goal is to bring these essential facilities to a significantly higher number of stations across various railway zones, ensuring that mothers across the country can travel without anxiety.

The public has responded with widespread appreciation for the move. By replacing the discomfort of nursing in public waiting areas with secure and well-equipped rooms, Indian Railways continues to enhance passenger experience and foster a more inclusive travel environment for families.
