Indian Railways has reached a major milestone in its mission to electrify the broad gauge network. How has the speed of electrification changed?
The pace of electrification has increased significantly over the last two decades. Between 2004 and 2014, the work progressed at a rate of 1.42 km per day. This speed jumped to over 15 km per day during 2019-2025 and reached approximately 19.6 km per day in 2023-24.

Railway officials stated that this shift reduces dependence on fossil fuels and lowers carbon emissions. To maintain this sustainability, Indian Railways integrated solar power, commissioning about 898 MW capacity across 2,626 stations by November 2025. All new rail lines and capacity expansion projects will now be planned with electrification from the start.
