Indian Railways clarifies passengers opting for no food get free water bottles

Indian Railways and the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation have officially detailed the specific regulations regarding the provision of complimentary Rail Neer packaged drinking water on premium train services including Vande Bharat Rajdhani and Shatabdi Express. These essential onboard amenities remain completely mandatory regardless of a passenger meal preference confirming that travellers who specifically opt for the no food booking choice during reservation are still fully entitled to receive their allocated water bottle. Passengers can now understand the exact entitlements and recent price revisions implemented across various premium routes.
Entitlements on Vande Bharat and Shatabdi Express Trains
On Vande Bharat Express trains passengers are provided with one complimentary 500 ml Rail Neer bottle as part of their journey. Furthermore travellers may request an additional 500 ml bottle at no extra cost if needed. This thoughtful transition from traditional 1-liter to 500 ml bottles was successfully implemented in April 2024 specifically as a practical measure to curb unnecessary water wastage on shorter and medium-distance routes. Similarly passengers travelling aboard Shatabdi Express trains receive a standard complimentary 500 ml Rail Neer bottle.
Regulations for Rajdhani Express and Long Journeys
For passengers travelling aboard Rajdhani Express trains the standard provision remains a 1-liter Rail Neer bottle to keep travellers well hydrated. IRCTC officials have clearly reiterated that this water service is an integral part of the overall onboard passenger experience completely independent of any individual meal selections made during ticket booking. Furthermore in the special event that a Rajdhani Express journey exceeds 20 hours due to unexpected operational delays or slow movement passengers are legally entitled to receive an additional complimentary bottle of water at no extra charge.
Recent Price Reductions on Rail Neer Purchases
Beyond these standard service amenities provided inside premium coaches the Ministry of Railways also announced an important price adjustment for purchased Rail Neer bottles which became effective on September 22 2025. To directly pass on the financial benefits of Goods and Services Tax reductions to everyday consumers, the price of a 1-liter bottle was lowered to ₹14 from ₹15 while the price of a 500 ml bottle was reduced to ₹9 from ₹10 at all authorized railway station stalls and catering units.
