Composite sleepers offer several technical advantages over traditional concrete or metal sleepers. These units are specifically designed for sensitive areas such as bridge approaches, points, and crossings. Here are the main benefits of these new sleepers:

  • Strength and Weight: They are much lighter than concrete but can withstand pressure up to 700 kg per square centimeter.
  • Durability: These sleepers provide better cushioning for trains, which reduces wear and tear on the tracks.
  • Maintenance: Being resistant to environmental factors, they require less frequent replacement and reduce overall maintenance costs.

Key AI technologies for track safety and monitoring

The Ministry of Railways is deploying multiple high-tech systems to ensure zero-error monitoring of the rail network. These systems use Ground Penetration Radar and image processing to identify even the smallest defects in rails and fastenings.

Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that technological integration is a continuous process aimed at achieving self-reliance through systems like Kavach. According to ministry data, the implementation of such advanced monitoring has led to a drastic reduction in accidents. In the 2014-15 period, there were 135 recorded accidents, which dropped to just 11 in the 2025-26 fiscal year. Furthermore, video surveillance systems with facial recognition have been expanded to 1,874 stations to monitor suspicious activities.
