Indian Railways Corridor Expansion: 1,000 New Trains

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced a massive infrastructure overhaul to quadruple the capacity of seven major rail corridors. This ambitious Indian Railways corridor expansion aims to solve the persistent issue of network congestion and significantly reduce passenger waiting lists across the country.

Boosting the Golden Quadrilateral and Diagonal Routes

The massive infrastructure project specifically targets the vital 'Golden Quadrilateral' network, which serves as the backbone of the country's connectivity between Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, and Mumbai. In addition to these primary routes, the expansion will focus on critical diagonal corridors that link Delhi to Chennai, Mumbai to Kolkata, and Delhi to Guwahati.

By quadrupling the capacity of these seven major corridors, the Ministry expects to facilitate the operation of 1,000 additional regular trains. Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, large-scale railway development has become a top priority, noting that such significant growth had been lacking in the sector for the previous 60 years. This momentum is evident in the fact that Indian Railways has already added 36,000 kilometers of new tracks over the last decade.

Meeting Growing Passenger and Freight Demands

The expansion is designed to address the dual pressure of rising passenger numbers and increasing freight requirements. A major driver for this capacity increase is the heavy demand for coal transportation, which requires efficient and high-capacity rail movement to support the nation's energy needs.

Festive Season Success and Enhanced Safety Measures

Beyond long-term infrastructure, the Ministry has been actively managing the surge in seasonal travel. For the recent Diwali and Chhath Puja festivities, authorities successfully deployed 18,000 special trains to accommodate travelers, a significant increase compared to the 12,000 special trains operated during the same period last year.

To manage the massive crowds and ensure passenger safety, several advanced measures were implemented at major railway hubs, including:

  • The installation of 700 AI-powered cameras to monitor stations and tracks.
  • The establishment of dedicated holding areas at nearly 20 major stations to control crowd flow.

Minister Vaishnaw confirmed that following the intense festive period, passenger traffic at major hubs had returned to normal levels as of Chhoti Diwali on November 7, 2026.
