Indian Railways Dec 2026 Ticket Booking Schedule

Indian Railways has officially released the December train ticket booking schedule, providing essential information for passengers planning their winter travel. With the winter season approaching, travelers need to be aware of new booking timelines, potential weather disruptions, and upcoming regulatory changes.
Booking Timeline and ARP Rules
For passengers planning to travel on December 18, 2026, the reservation window will open on October 19, 2026, at 8:00 AM. This follows the current Advance Reservation Period (ARP) of 60 days, which was established on November 1, 2024, to streamline the reservation process across the network.
Winter Fog and Infrastructure Disruptions
Travelers should prepare for potential delays due to seasonal weather. Indian Railways has confirmed that 13 trains will be affected by cancellations or service reductions between December 2026 and February 2027 due to anticipated winter fog.
Furthermore, infrastructure works at the Renigunta Yard, including yard remodeling and electronic interlocking, are expected to cause additional train cancellations and diversions throughout December 2026. Passengers are encouraged to monitor their train status closely during this period.
Tatkal Guidelines and Mandatory Insurance
For those seeking last-minute travel via the Tatkal system, please adhere to the following reservation timings (one day prior to the journey):
- AC Classes: 10:00 AM
- Sleeper and 2S Classes: 11:00 AM
Note that Tatkal bookings are limited to four tickets per PNR and require mandatory Aadhaar or government-issued ID verification.
Mandatory Travel Insurance: Following a recent directive from the Supreme Court of India, travel insurance will become mandatory for all railway tickets starting October 27, 2026. This applies to all tickets, including those purchased at reservation counters.
New Online Rescheduling Feature
To improve passenger convenience, the Ministry of Railways is scheduled to implement an online ticket rescheduling feature in January 2026. This feature aims to allow passengers to reschedule their journeys online, with the possibility of waiving standard cancellation fees depending on fare differences and seat availability.
