Indian Railways upgrades Delhi Howrah route infrastructure and speed

Indian Railways is undertaking a significant expansion of the Delhi-Howrah route to alleviate congestion and manage rising passenger and freight traffic. The government has sanctioned the construction of a third railway line connecting Subedarganj to Aligarh via Kanpur, a critical project designed to enhance network capacity. This initiative aligns with a broader infrastructure strategy aimed at improving speed, safety, and operational efficiency across high-density corridors.

Indian Railways is actively transforming the Delhi-Howrah corridor with major infrastructure upgrades, speed enhancements, and advanced safety systems to handle growing passenger and freight traffic efficiently.

Speed Upgrades and Safety Integration

Speed enhancement efforts are already in an advanced stage, with upgrades sanctioned to achieve sectional speeds of 160 kmph across the 1,450 km Delhi-Howrah route. Technological integration is central to this effort; on March 22, 2026, the indigenous Kavach Automatic Train Protection system was successfully commissioned on a 190-kilometer stretch between Prayagraj and Kanpur. Furthermore, infrastructure reliability has been improved through the renovation of two 73-year-old bridges, Bridge No. 48 and Bridge No. 46, on the Chopan-Chunar section, which eliminated a permanent 30 kmph speed restriction.

Subedarganj Station Redevelopment

Subedarganj is being developed as a major satellite hub for North Central Railway to reduce congestion at Prayagraj Junction. Proposals are currently moving forward to add two platforms to the station, bringing the total to eight, while the Railway Board reviews plans to introduce two-minute halts for over two dozen major trains at the site.

Multi Tracking Expansion Strategy

These projects form part of a comprehensive multi-tracking expansion strategy that includes the 375 km Son Nagar to Andal section, an 18 km fifth line between Kalipahari and Bakhtarnagar, and a 43 km fourth line between Saktigarh and Chandanpur.
