Diwali & Chhath: Indian Railways Launches Special Trains

To combat the massive surge in passenger demand during the upcoming Diwali and Chhath Puja festivals, Indian Railways has announced a massive expansion of its services. The move aims to provide relief to travelers facing ticket shortages and soaring airfares during this peak festive season.
Massive Boost in Train Services
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has confirmed the introduction of over 100 special services to accommodate the festive rush. Among the key highlights is the launch of 14 pairs of dedicated festival special trains.
Central Railway is taking a significant lead in this initiative, contributing 162 new trains, which brings its seasonal total to a staggering 580 services. This massive deployment is designed to ensure that more passengers can travel comfortably between major hubs.
Special Arrangements for Bihar Passengers
Recognizing the heavy footfall in the Bihar region, the East Central Railway is implementing a robust logistical plan. Starting November 3, temporary holding areas will be established at 15 key railway stations to manage approximately 1 lakh passengers daily.
Station Amenities and Security
These holding areas are designed to provide essential facilities to ensure passenger comfort and safety. Key amenities include:
- Real-time train status boards
- Medical booths for emergencies
- Clean drinking water facilities
- Adequate seating arrangements
- Loudspeakers for announcements
Major hubs like Patna Junction, Rajendra Nagar Terminal, and Patliputra Junction will each be equipped to accommodate up to 10,000 passengers. To maintain order, a 24-hour security war room will be operational at these locations.
New Routes and General Class Relief
To further ease the pressure on unreserved coaches, the Railways has proposed 10 duplicate general trains. These will serve critical routes across Bihar, Jharkhand, Purvanchal, and Prayagraj, allowing passengers to travel using unreserved tickets more easily.
Infrastructure and premium connectivity are also getting a boost with several new service announcements:
- Vande Bharat Express: A new service connecting Purnia and Patna.
- Amrit Bharat Express: Four new trains connecting Delhi-Gaya, Saharsa-Amritsar, Chhapra-Delhi, and Muzaffarpur-Hyderabad.
How to Book Your Tickets
Passengers are advised to plan their journeys in advance. Tickets can be booked through the following official channels:
- The official IRCTC website
- The Rail One mobile application
- Computerized reservation centers across the country
The Railways is also employing a three-tiered strategy to manage waitlists, which includes adding extra sleeper and general coaches to existing rakes based on real-time demand data.
