Indian Railways Door-to-Door Parcel Service via New App

Indian Railways is set to transform the logistics landscape with the introduction of a comprehensive door-to-door parcel delivery service. Designed to assist commuters, small businesses, and online retailers, this new initiative aims to make sending goods as easy as a few taps on a smartphone, bridging the gap between the sender and the receiver.

Seamless 'First-Mile' and 'Last-Mile' Logistics

The upcoming service will streamline the entire shipping process by handling the logistics from start to finish. Under this model, logistics partners will manage the 'first-mile' pickup from a customer's residence and the 'last-mile' delivery to the final destination. While the partners handle the collection and drop-off, Indian Railways will take charge of the actual rail transit between locations.

To ensure the safety of goods, these logistics partners may also provide supplemental packaging services during the collection process.

The 'Ghar se Ghar Tak' Digital Marketplace

To eliminate the need for tedious physical paperwork at railway stations, all transactions will be managed through a dedicated mobile application: 'Rail Parcel App – Ghar se Ghar Tak.' This app serves as a digital marketplace where users can manage bookings and payments entirely online.

The digital process includes several security and convenience features:

  • Digital Reference: Upon successful booking, users will receive a 10-digit digital reference code.
  • Automated Invoicing: A GST invoice will be generated for every transaction.
  • OTP Verification: To ensure secure delivery, the final drop-off will be verified via a One-Time Password (OTP).

Phased Rollout: Major Cities First

The service will be introduced in stages to ensure operational efficiency. The initial phase will debut in eight major metropolitan hubs:

  1. Delhi
  2. Mumbai
  3. Kolkata
  4. Chennai
  5. Ahmedabad
  6. Hyderabad
  7. Bengaluru
  8. Pune

Following the initial launch, a second phase is planned to extend coverage to key cities including Prayagraj, Varanasi, Kanpur, and Lucknow.

Booking Guidelines and Cancellation Policy

Indian Railways has established specific operational guidelines to maintain the schedule and reliability of the service:

  • Booking Window: Users can place bookings up to 15 days in advance, but no later than one day before a train's scheduled departure.
  • Handover Protocol: Logistics partners are required to hand over all parcels to railway personnel at least one hour before the train departs.
  • Refund Policy: If a booking is cancelled before the pickup occurs, the railway will refund the full rail fare, subject to a 10-rupee clerical charge.

Note: Refunds regarding the logistics portion of the service will be governed by the individual provider's specific terms, which will be disclosed at the time of booking.

This initiative follows a successful pilot program, although an official national launch date is currently pending.
