Indian Railways doubles cleanliness fines to two thousand rupees for violators

Indian Railways has introduced much stricter regulations to improve hygiene and sanitation across its vast network spanning railway stations like Bhawanimandi and all operating trains. Passengers and visitors must now be extremely careful about keeping railway premises clean, as authorities have significantly increased financial penalties for littering and other related offenses. The maximum on-the-spot penalty for littering and hygiene violations has been doubled from five hundred rupees to one thousand rupees. Failure to pay the immediate penalty may result in the offender being produced before a competent court, where the fine can be escalated up to a maximum of two thousand rupees. These revised rules, known as the Indian Railways Amendment Rules of 2026, were officially notified in the gazette on August 24, 2026. Enforcement of these stricter cleanliness guidelines is officially carried out by authorized personnel including Station Masters, Station Managers, Ticket Collectors from the Commercial Department, and equivalent-rank officials from the Operating Department.

Understanding the Revised Cleanliness Guidelines

These newly implemented rules apply strictly to a broad spectrum of prohibited activities across all railway property. Commuters can face heavy penalties for common violations such as spitting, urinating, or defecating in non-designated areas. Additionally, activities like washing clothes, utensils, or vehicles on railway premises are now strictly banned. Passengers are also prohibited from feeding animals or birds, cooking or bathing in unauthorized zones, and pasting posters or defacing railway property in any manner.

A Nationwide Push for Better Hygiene Standards

The enforcement of these measures took effect immediately upon publication in August as part of a comprehensive nationwide initiative by Indian Railways. The primary goal is to bolster overall hygiene standards and ensure the continuous maintenance of cleaner railway environments for the comfort and health of all daily commuters, long-distance passengers, and station users. Travelers are strongly advised to cooperate with railway staff and utilize designated dustbins and facilities to avoid facing these hefty new fines during their journey.
