Indian Railways Bans Unauthorised Drones & Reels Near Tracks

Indian Railways has officially implemented a stringent set of regulations regarding drone operations and videography near railway tracks, stations, and critical infrastructure. These new rules, which come into effect on October 16, 2026, aim to bolster security and prevent accidents caused by unauthorized filming.
Crackdown on Social Media Influencers
The decision follows a growing concern over social media influencers filming content near sensitive areas, including routes used by the Vande Bharat Express. Such activities are not just a security risk but also pose significant dangers to electrical installations and the smooth operation of trains.
Authorities have noted that flying drones near tracks can interfere with train movement and endanger public safety. In a recent legal precedent in Kollam, Kerala, an individual was penalized and sentenced to community service for flying a drone illegally over the Kappil-Edava railway line.
Strict Legal Consequences and Enforcement
To ensure compliance, the railways are leveraging the Railways Act, 1989. Violators found operating drones or filming unauthorizedly will face prosecution under Sections 147 and 153. The penalties are severe, including:
- Significant financial fines
- Potential imprisonment
- Legal action under the Jan Vishwas Act amendments
The East Coast Railway (ECoR) has already adopted a 'zero-tolerance' policy. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) have been directed to actively monitor tracks to deter individuals from creating social media reels on tracks or running on train footboards.
Rules for Photography and Commercial Filming
While the crackdown is strict, the railways have clarified what is permitted for the general public:
Non-Commercial Use
Indian citizens are permitted to take non-commercial photographs using mobile devices within designated concourse areas. However, passengers must be prepared to produce valid identification upon request by railway officials.
Professional and Commercial Filming
Any professional or commercial videography requires formal authorization. This process includes:
- Obtaining prior official approval from the relevant railway authorities.
- Coordinating with the office of the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO).
- Payment of applicable license fees.
Southern Railway has explicitly stated that no drone operations are allowed near any railway property without prior official permission. Additionally, officials from the Northeast Frontier Railway and North Central Railway have reiterated that all non-commercial requests must be coordinated through the CPRO to ensure security protocols are met.
