Indian Railways Electrification Hits 99.7%: Second Globally!
India hits a massive milestone with 99.7% electrification of its Broad Gauge network, ranking second in the world.

Indian Railways has achieved a monumental milestone in its Indian Railways electrification progress, reaching approximately 99.7% electrification of its Broad Gauge (BG) network as of September 30, 2026. This massive infrastructure achievement marks a turning point in the nation's railway history.
A Massive Leap in Infrastructure
The scale of this transformation is evident in the sheer volume of electrified tracks. Out of a total 70,502 route kilometres (RKm) of Broad Gauge lines, 70,311 RKm have now been successfully electrified. The pace of this work has accelerated dramatically compared to previous eras.
- Pre-2014 Era: Only 33% of the network was powered by electricity.
- 2014 to 2026: A total of 48,072 route kilometres were electrified.
- Historical Comparison: In the sixty years preceding 2014, only 21,801 route kilometres had been electrified.
Ranking Second in the World
This rapid expansion has propelled India to the position of the second most electrified major railway system on the planet. Currently, India is surpassed only by Switzerland, which has achieved 100% electrification.
How India Compares Globally
India's electrification levels now place it significantly ahead of several other major global railway networks:
- China: 82%
- Japan: 64%
- France: 60%
- United Kingdom: 39%
The Final Stretch and Environmental Impact
The Ministry of Railways is currently working in mission mode to complete the final 191 route kilometres of pending work. These remaining sections are located within the states of Assam, Karnataka, and Goa.
This massive shift toward electric traction is a central part of the government's strategy to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels and significantly lower carbon emissions. The reduction in diesel usage has been remarkable:
Diesel consumption for train operations plummeted from 293 crore litres in the 2015-16 fiscal year to just 108 crore litres in 2024-25.
Lower Fares for Passengers Coming Soon
To further optimize operations and provide relief to commuters, Indian Railways is conducting a nationwide review of its service classifications. Effective January 1, 2027, certain 'Superfast' trains will be reclassified as 'Mail/Express' services. This move is specifically intended to reduce ticket fares for passengers.
