Indian Railways Hits 99.7% Electrification Milestone!

Indian Railways has achieved a monumental feat in its journey toward modernization, successfully electrifying 99.7% of its Broad Gauge (BG) network. As of October 9, 2026, the nation is on the brink of a complete transition to electric traction, marking a massive leap in sustainable transport and operational efficiency.

The Numbers Behind the Mission

The scale of this achievement is reflected in the sheer volume of track covered. Out of the total 70,502 route kilometers (RKm) in the Broad Gauge network, a staggering 70,311 RKm have already been electrified. Only a tiny fraction of 191 RKm remains to be completed to reach total coverage.

This mission-mode project is a cornerstone of India's ambitious environmental strategy. By transitioning away from diesel, the Ministry of Railways is working aggressively toward the national objective of becoming a Net Zero Carbon Emitter by 2030.

Massive Savings in Diesel and Foreign Exchange

The shift to electric power is not just about the environment; it is a massive economic win for the country. The reduction in diesel dependency has been dramatic:

  • 2015-16 Fiscal Year: 293 crore litres of diesel consumed.
  • 2024-25 Fiscal Year: 108 crore litres of diesel consumed.

This sharp decline has resulted in substantial savings of foreign exchange, making the railway operations significantly more cost-effective.

Regional Progress: Assam, Karnataka, and Goa

While the work is nearing completion nationwide, progress varies across different states. The Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE) is currently navigating challenges such as forest clearances, statutory approvals, and difficult topography to finish the remaining sections.

Key regional updates include:

  • Assam: A major success story, the state achieved 100% railway electrification in September 2026.
  • Karnataka: 96.8% of its 3,743 RKm Broad Gauge network is now electrified.
  • Goa: The state has completed 171 RKm of its 187 RKm network, with only 16 RKm currently under progress.

A Global Leader in Railway Electrification

With this achievement, India has secured its position on the global stage. The country currently stands as the second most electrified major railway system in the world, trailing only Switzerland.

To fuel this massive transformation, approximately ₹29,826 crore was invested in electrification projects between the 2020-21 and 2024-25 fiscal years. Moving forward, the Ministry has ensured that all new multi-tracking and line projects are sanctioned with electrification plans included from their very inception.
