Indian Railways enforces strict luggage limits and warns passengers about heavy penalties for unbooked baggage
Indian Railways is reminding passengers that carrying luggage beyond prescribed free allowances can lead to significant financial penalties, including fines of up to six times the normal luggage rate for unbooked items. While many travelers are unaware of these regulations, the national carrier maintains strict limits on baggage to ensure passenger safety and comfort. Each class of travel has a specific free allowance: 70 kg for AC First Class, 50 kg for AC 2-Tier and First Class, 40 kg for AC 3-Tier/AC 3 Economy/AC Chair Car, 40 kg for Sleeper Class, and 35 kg for Second Class and General coaches. Children aged 5 to 12 years traveling on half-price tickets are entitled to a 50 kg allowance. Passengers who require additional capacity beyond their free limit are encouraged to pre-book their luggage via the IRCTC platform, a facility introduced on July 31, 2026. Pre-booked excess luggage is charged at 1.5 times the normal rate, with a minimum charge of ₹30. Items must also adhere to specific size dimensions; standard trunks and suitcases in passenger compartments are generally limited to 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm, while AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car passengers are limited to 55 cm x 45 cm x 22.5 cm. Luggage exceeding these sizes or the maximum permissible weight limits must be transported in the luggage brake van.
