Indian Railways Fare Cut: Superfast Trains to Become Express
Indian Railways to reduce fares from Jan 1, 2027, by reclassifying certain Superfast trains to Express status. Check savings and affected trains here.

Passengers traveling on several popular routes across the country are in for a welcome surprise. Starting January 1, 2027, Indian Railways will implement a fare reduction for a selection of its trains, making travel more affordable for millions of commuters.
The Reclassification Shift
This price drop comes as a result of a massive nationwide review conducted by the Railway Board. To justify the "Superfast" label and its associated surcharge, a train must maintain a minimum average speed of 55 kmph. However, the board has determined that several services can no longer meet this speed threshold.
The primary reasons cited for this reclassification include:
- Increased rail traffic on major corridors.
- The addition of more station stoppages to improve connectivity.
- Frequent operational delays affecting average speeds.
Consequently, these trains will be reclassified from Superfast status to either Express or Mail/Express status, effectively removing the mandatory Superfast surcharge from your ticket.
How Much Will You Save?
The reduction in fares will vary depending on the class of travel. While the exact savings depend on the specific route, passengers can expect the following approximate reductions per ticket:
- Sleeper Class: ₹15 to ₹30 savings.
- AC Classes (3AC, 3AC Economy, AC Chair Car, and 2AC): Approximately ₹45 savings.
- 1st AC and Executive Class: Savings of up to ₹75.
Which Trains are Affected?
Several well-known services are part of this transition. While their schedules and arrival/departure timings will remain largely unchanged, these trains will be assigned new train numbers. Some of the prominent trains affected include:
- Shramjeevi Express
- Magadh Express
- Saptkranti Express
- Purnagiri Jan Shatabdi
Note to Passengers: While station halts and timings are expected to remain the same, it is highly recommended to verify the updated train numbers and the new fare structure via the official IRCTC website or at railway reservation counters before booking travel for dates on or after January 1, 2027.
