Indian Railways Unveils 1,000+ Festive Special Trains for 2026

To combat the massive surge in passenger traffic during the upcoming festive season, Indian Railways has announced an extensive network of special trains. Spanning a 61-day period from October 1 to November 30, 2026, over 1,000 special train trips have been scheduled to connect the Delhi-NCR region with major destinations across the country.

North Central Railway, working alongside Northern, Central, and Eastern Railways, is spearheading this initiative to ensure travelers can reach their destinations comfortably during the holiday rush.

Smart Scheduling via 'Trains on Demand'

The railway administration is employing a data-driven approach to manage this high-traffic period. Dr. Shivam Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of North Central Railway, noted that many of these services are categorized as 'Trains on Demand' (TODs). These services are not random; they are managed through real-time analysis of passenger waiting lists and demand patterns to ensure the most needed routes are prioritized.

Key Festive Special Routes and Schedules

Several high-demand routes have been identified with specific services to alleviate congestion. Some of the notable special trains include:

  • Charlapalli–Hazrat Nizamuddin Special (07021/07022): Operating seven trips from Charlapalli on Mondays between October 19 and November 30, with return trips from Hazrat Nizamuddin on Wednesdays.
  • Nanded–Hazrat Nizamuddin Special (07621/07622): Seven trips from Nanded (October 17–November 28) and return trips from Hazrat Nizamuddin (October 18–November 29).
  • Delhi-Gaya Festival Special (04064/04063): A major service providing 31 trips in both directions, running from Delhi Junction to Gaya between October 26 and November 30.
  • Ayodhya Cantt-Anand Vihar Special (04213/04214): Scheduled to complete 36 trips to cater to pilgrims and travelers.
  • Bhagalpur-Anand Vihar Terminal Special (04061): A daily service running from October 11 to November 26.
  • Prayagraj Specials: Including the Prayagraj-Shakurbasti Special (02417) and the weekly Prayagraj-Dadri Special (02275) every Friday.
  • Other Notable Services: The Varanasi-Delhi Festival Special Express (04209/04210), the Narayanpur Bazar-Shakurbasti Special (04163), and the Howrah-New Delhi Special (04051).

Massive Capacity Boost for Passengers

To date, Indian Railways has approved a total of 580 festival special trains. This includes 162 brand-new services introduced by Central Railway alone. These additional services are expected to benefit approximately 32,000 passengers traveling on vital routes connecting Delhi, Mumbai, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh.

Enhanced Safety and Station Management

With the expected increase in footfall, railway authorities are taking extra precautions to maintain order and cleanliness. To manage the crowds effectively, additional commercial staff and RPF (Railway Protection Force) personnel will be deployed at major stations. Furthermore, these efforts will coincide with the 'Swachhata Abhiyan' cleanliness drive to ensure a hygienic environment for all travelers during the peak season.

How to Book Your Tickets

Passengers looking to travel during the festive period can book their tickets through the following channels:

  1. The official IRCTC portal for online bookings.
  2. Physical PRS (Passenger Reservation System) counters at railway stations.
