No Firecrackers on Trains: Indian Railways Warns of 3-Year Jail
Indian Railways has banned firecrackers and inflammable items. Violators face up to 3 years in jail and heavy fines under the Railways Act.
With the festive season fast approaching, Indian Railways has issued a high-alert advisory to all passengers. To prevent life-threatening accidents, the authorities have strictly prohibited the transportation of firecrackers, rockets, and other explosive materials in passenger coaches and via railway parcel services.
The decision comes as a response to the extreme fire risks posed by such items. Railway officials have emphasized that even a tiny spark in the enclosed, often crowded environment of a train compartment can lead to a catastrophic fire, endangering the lives of passengers, railway staff, and causing massive damage to railway property.
Severe Legal Consequences for Violators
Carrying prohibited items is no longer just a matter of a simple fine; it is a serious criminal offense under the law. The Railways has made it clear that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found in violation of these safety norms.
According to Section 164 of the Railways Act, 1989, individuals caught carrying dangerous or offensive goods on trains or within railway premises can face:
- Imprisonment for a period of up to three years;
- A fine of up to ₹1,000;
- Or both imprisonment and a fine.
Additionally, Section 165 of the Act mandates a heavy penalty of at least ₹10,000 for bringing prohibited offensive materials into railway premises. Furthermore, the offender will be held legally liable for any loss, injury, or damage resulting from their actions.
Strictly Prohibited Items List
To avoid legal trouble and ensure a safe journey, passengers must ensure their luggage does not contain any of the following:
- Explosives: Firecrackers, sparklers, rockets, and other pyrotechnics.
- Inflammable Liquids: Petrol, diesel, and kerosene.
- Gas Containers: Gas cylinders or similar pressurized items.
Heightened Security for Diwali and Chhath Puja
Recognizing the massive surge in passenger movement during the Diwali and Chhath Puja festivals, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) have intensified their security presence. Authorities are conducting rigorous checks to maintain safety standards.
Enhanced surveillance measures currently in place include:
- Increased use of baggage scanners at stations and parcel offices;
- Constant CCTV monitoring of trains and platforms;
- Deployment of specialized dog squads to detect explosive materials.
