Indian Railways Freight Growth & Revenue Surge Sept 2026

Indian Railways has reported significant freight growth, recording a massive boost in both cargo volume and revenue for September 2026. This surge highlights the increasing efficiency of the national rail network in transporting essential commodities across the country.

A Major Jump in Cargo Loading and Earnings

Data released by the Ministry of Railways and the Railway Board reveals that the network successfully transported 135.35 million tonnes (MT) of cargo in September 2026. This represents a 6.14% increase compared to the 127.52 MT recorded in September 2025.

This rise in volume has led to a substantial financial boost. Earnings from freight operations increased by ₹1,266 crore, marking a 9.3% rise over the figures reported in September 2025.

The performance in September contributed to a strong first half of the 2026-27 fiscal year. Between April and September 2026, total freight loading reached 833.7 million tonnes, a 4.1% year-on-year increase, while associated earnings grew by 3.7%.

The growth was driven by several key commodity segments, with food grains seeing the most dramatic rise. The major contributors include:

  • Food Grains: 25% increase
  • Clinker: 20% increase
  • Domestic Containers: 10% increase
  • Coal: 9% increase
  • Mineral Oil: 6% increase
  • Finished Steel: 5.5% increase
  • Iron Ore: 5.2% increase

Additionally, the balance of other goods registered an 8.2% improvement in loading volumes.

Boosting Power Sector Logistics

The railway network has also significantly improved logistical support for the power sector. The average daily supply of domestic coal to power plants rose to 443 rakes in September 2026, compared to 397 rakes in September 2025—an impressive 11.6% increase.
