Indian Railways approves 800 crore rupees for freight infrastructure upgrades
Indian Railways is accelerating its freight network modernization through strategic infrastructure investments and high-level operational reviews. On September 5, 2026, the Ministry of Railways announced major initiatives to boost cargo capacity, improve safety, and streamline port connectivity across the country. Key highlights of the recent developments include the formal approval of infrastructure projects valued at approximately ₹800 crore, strategic port connectivity discussions for the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, and record-breaking performance milestones across fully commissioned freight corridors.
Strategic Port Connectivity Meetings Held
DFCCIL Managing Director Praveen Kumar held critical discussions with Gujarat Chief Secretary Shri Manoj Kumar Das to bolster multimodal logistics, specifically focusing on connecting the Maroli port in Valsad to the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC). Separately, Managing Director Kumar visited Mumbai to inspect the New JNPT Station, reviewing operational preparedness with Western Railway General Manager Ramashray Pandey to optimize rail connectivity for the port.
Infrastructure Projects Worth ₹800 Crore Approved
Indian Railways has formally approved infrastructure projects valued at approximately ₹800 crore to enhance safety and freight capacity. These include a ₹272-crore freight bypass in the South Eastern Railway, which is expected to add 8.88 million tonnes of annual goods capacity. Other sanctioned works involve a Kavach signaling rollout in the Northern Railway's Moradabad division and yard remodeling at Bhavnagar Para in Gujarat. These measures aim to alleviate congestion on a network currently operating at 71% utilization.
Impressive Dedicated Freight Corridor Performance
Operational data reveals that both the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (1,337 km) and the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (1,506 km) are now fully commissioned. The network supports an average of 443 trains per day, having managed over 5.07 lakh freight trains since inception. In the 2025-26 fiscal year alone, the corridors facilitated the movement of 1.48 lakh trains, carrying 203 million GTKM of freight. Furthermore, the recently launched rapid parcel service between New Dadri and New Ancheli, initiated on August 18, 2026, continues to provide 23-hour transit for time-sensitive cargo with an annual revenue potential of ₹76 crore. Looking ahead, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed that planning is underway for a new East-West Rail Corridor connecting Surat and Dankuni, as announced in the Union Budget 2026.
