Indian Railways activates high alert along Bhagalpur tracks as Ganga water levels rise

Indian Railways has placed its officials on high alert in the Bhagalpur region as the water level of the Ganga River nears the danger mark. Following a breach in the Kajikoriya-Raghopur embankment which occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. on August 24 2026 near Ward 12 Tola Shankarpur in the Kharik circle concerns regarding potential flooding in September have intensified. Railway personnel have been mandated to conduct 24-hour patrolling to mitigate risks of soil erosion and track subsidence. District Magistrate Alankrita Pandey is overseeing the situation supported by the Additional Collector Disaster Management the Naugachia Sub-Divisional Officer and officials from the Flood Control Department who are currently stationed at the site. The erosion point is located approximately 500 meters from the ancestral village of Bihar Energy Minister Bulo Mandal. The Flood Control Department has issued strict directives for constant monitoring of all embankments sluice gates and sensitive locations.

Focus on Sensitive Rail Sections

Railway officials have prioritized the Bhagalpur-Kiul rail section particularly the area surrounding Bridge No. 195 between Bariarpur and Ratanpur stations. This location is considered highly sensitive as previous floodwaters have reached the bridge girders forcing train cancellations and route diversions over the past four to five years. In response the railway administration has mobilized stone dust and sandbags for reinforcement. A dedicated action plan is in effect for areas such as Kajra where potential water encroachment poses a threat to track safety ensuring that all vulnerable rail lines are under continuous surveillance.
