Indian Railways has announced a major capacity expansion by doubling train configurations from 12 to 24 coaches to help daily commuters, students, and professionals travel without overcrowding. According to official updates, this permanent upgrade aims to boost passenger convenience and technical capacity across key routes. Here are the important details regarding the revised train operations and coach configurations. The Kanpur Central-Prayagraj Sangam Express has been upgraded to a 24-coach configuration effective immediately. Train number 22442 Kanpur Central-Chitrakoot Dham Karvi Express and 14124 Chitrakoot Dham Karvi-Maa Belha Devi Dham Pratapgarh Express will start running with 24 coaches on September 8, 2026. The return services of train number 14123 and 22441 will operate with 24 coaches starting September 9, 2026.
The newly expanded train configuration consists of 22 general coaches and two SLR/D coaches, providing much-needed relief to general class passengers who frequently face severe overcrowding during peak hours. This rollout follows a strategic operational merger. The older 14109/14110 Chitrakoot Dham Karvi-Kanpur Central Express and the 14123/14124 Maa Belha Devi Dham Pratapgarh-Kanpur Central Express have now been merged to operate as a single unified service running as the 14123/14124 Maa Belha Devi Dham Pratapgarh-Chitrakoot Dham Karvi Express.
CPRO Dr. Shivam Sharma confirmed the implementation details, while Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Samarth Gupta highlighted that this structural change significantly improves direct rail connectivity between Maa Belha Devi Dham Pratapgarh, Kanpur Central, and Chitrakoot Dham Karvi. Additionally, the revised routing successfully extends direct train services to everyday travellers in Amethi, Raebareli, and Lucknow, making regional journeys far more seamless and comfortable.
