Indian Railways is taking decisive action to combat noise pollution and improve the travel experience for passengers. Under new regulations, the Indian Railways loud audio penalty will be strictly enforced to ensure that commuters can enjoy a peaceful journey without the disturbance of loud music or speaker-mode phone calls.

Severe Consequences for Noise Violations

Effective from October 2026, passengers are required to use earphones for all media consumption. The new rules, which follow the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2026, amend Section 145(2) of the Railways Act, 1989, to provide authorities with stronger enforcement powers.

The penalties for violating these noise regulations are significant:

  • For an initial violation: Passengers may face a fine of ₹1,000, be removed from the train, and have their ticket forfeited.
  • For persistent nuisance: If a passenger continues to create a disturbance after being directed by an authorized official, such as a Ticket Examiner, the penalty can escalate to a fine of up to ₹5,000, six months of imprisonment, or both.

New 'Quiet Hours' Policy Introduced

In addition to the penalties for loud audio, Indian Railways has implemented a 'Quiet Hours' policy to facilitate rest for long-distance travelers. This policy is effective from 10 PM to 6 AM, during which all loud talking and audio playback are strictly prohibited.

Reporting Grievances

While Southern Railway has been actively raising awareness through official notices and station announcements, passengers are encouraged to take an active role in maintaining decorum. If you are disturbed by noise, you can report the matter directly to railway staff or use the Rail Madad platform to lodge a complaint.
