1,000 New Trains: Indian Railways' Mega Plan to End Waiting Lists

In a massive move to transform the passenger experience, Indian Railways has unveiled a mega plan to add 1,000 new trains. This ambitious initiative aims to tackle the long-standing issue of passenger waiting lists by significantly boosting both infrastructure and operational capacity across the nation.

Quadrupling Tracks on 7 Major Corridors

The core of this long-term strategy involves the massive task of quadrupling tracks on seven critical rail corridors. These routes serve as the lifelines of the country, connecting major metropolitan hubs. Once the infrastructure upgrades are finalized, the additional capacity will allow for the deployment of over 1,000 regular trains.

The specific corridors slated for this massive expansion include:

  • Delhi-Howrah
  • Howrah-Chennai
  • Chennai-Mumbai
  • Mumbai-Delhi
  • Delhi-Chennai
  • Mumbai-Howrah
  • Delhi-Guwahati

A Decade of Infrastructure Growth

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the scale of recent progress, noting that the railways have successfully laid 36,000 kilometers of additional track over the last ten years. He emphasized that expanding the physical network is the only way to relieve the intense pressure currently placed on existing lines.

"The operation of these 1,000 extra trains will commence once the corridor expansion work is fully finalized," the Minister clarified, underscoring a commitment to long-term capacity building.

Festival Season Readiness: Diwali and Chhath

While the mega plan focuses on long-term infrastructure, the Ministry is also making immediate arrangements for the upcoming festive rush during Diwali and Chhath. To manage the surge in travelers, several temporary measures are being implemented:

  • Special Trains: Deployment of 18,000 special trains to handle holiday crowds.
  • AI Monitoring: Installation of approximately 700 AI-enabled cameras to enhance security and monitoring.
  • Passenger Comfort: Creation of dedicated 'holding areas' at roughly 20 major railway stations to manage large volumes of passengers.
