New PNR Numbering System Coming to Indian Railways by 2026

Indian Railways is gearing up for a massive digital transformation that will fundamentally change how passengers interact with the booking system. The Ministry of Railways is preparing to overhaul its Passenger Reservation System (PRS) by transitioning to a next-generation, cloud-based infrastructure. A key part of this upgrade is a significant change to the 10-digit Passenger Name Record (PNR) numbering format.
What Changes in the New PNR Format?
Starting in December 2026, passengers will notice a change in the starting digits of their PNR numbers. All new PNRs generated across all trains will begin with the digits 1, 3, 5, or 7. While the initial digits are changing to accommodate the new system, the total length of the PNR will remain a 10-digit identification number.
