New PNR Numbers & Major Railway Reservation Rule Changes

Indian Railways is undergoing a massive digital transformation of its Passenger Reservation System (PRS), introducing a completely revamped PNR series and several critical updates to booking and refund regulations. These changes, overseen by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, aim to modernize the legacy system that has been in place since 1986.
The Shift to the New PNR Series
Passengers will soon notice a significant change in their ticket identification. The traditional zone-based coding system is being phased out in favor of a new automated assignment system. Under the new protocol, valid e-tickets and counter reservations will feature PNR numbers starting with the digits 1, 3, 5, or 7.
This transition is already being tested on 1,230 selected trains. Notable examples include:
- Lucknow Mail and AC Express: New series introduced by November 17.
- Pushpak Express: New series introduced on December 2.
Railway officials have clarified that this change is a technical upgrade and does not pose any security risk to passengers. The full implementation across all trains is expected to be completed by the third week of December 2026.
High-Speed Booking and AI Integration
Developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the upgraded PRS is built for massive scale. The new platform is capable of handling over 1.5 lakh bookings and 40 lakh inquiries every single minute. Furthermore, the system is being enhanced with AI-powered technology to provide more accurate waitlist predictions for travelers.
